Task 2 / Typographic Exploration & Communication

We were given 3 different editorial text to choose from, and were told to pick one from the three options for this task. I decided on doing the article "Be Good, Do Good, Follow the Code."

I started off by sketching out some of my ideas on paper, then only I digitised my designs to Illustrator and InDesign.

Below are the sketches-

Then I planned on the layout I wanted on InDesign. Below is the first progress of my text formatting on InDesign (font Gill Sans, 8pt, Leading 10pt)-

I then continued with the ideas I had for the headlines on Illustrator. I played around with the texts and fonts, and finally chose a few which I preferred to continue with the task.

I took on board the advice and suggestions of my peers and made slight adjustments to my work.

Try putting grey shades over the text to look at the evenness.

FEEDBACK

Week 6

Specific feedback- Could explore more on the type expression for the heading, try to express more on the meaning of the words. Since I'm trying to emphasise on the word "good", maybe I can try to show a little more impact on the word. Some said I could go with the type expression in Option 1, but try to express the word better. I also got feedback from some saying that the expressions are well crafted, but they think I'll need to work more on the type expression to in order for it match the meaning of the words.
The type formatting and text layout looks neat. Kerning and tracking were appropriate. Font size corresponds with the line length, leading and paragraph spacing (font size: 8pt, line length: around 52, leading: 10pt, paragraph spacing: 10pt). Left alignment suits my layout, ragging is well controlled, work is crossed aligned. No widows and orphans present, however, a feedback said that I could try putting the entire paragraph together in one column and see if it looks cleaner. Also, note on the alignment of heading.

General feedback- Could add simple graphical elements or shapes to better express certain words in the heading. For example, by adding a halo on the "o" of "good", to express the word "good" in an angelic way.

REFLECTION

Week 6

Experience
We started learning more about text formatting and the different functions in InDesign and Illustrator. One of the most useful techniques I learned was how to import Illustrator files into InDesign. All these were very useful and came in handy for the text formatting task 2.

Observation
I feel like I'm getting better and more familiarised with InDesign and Illustrator after practicing and playing with it for a few times. It's getting more and more easier for me to navigate around these software and use the different techniques/functions well.

Findings
I think I could still work more on type expressing, it seems like the words I'm trying to express are still not as impactful, I should work more on that area. Besides that, I could also understand and practice more on text formatting in order to improve on it as well.
